This course will look to examine all of the key areas that make an effective industry professional in this competitive and exciting sector. An Artist Manager’s role is to understand most other roles and glue them together in order cultivate and nurture an artist for the best chance of success. Artist Management is one of the key areas of the music industry and this subject will give students a full understanding of what it takes to be an artist manager in today’s modern music industry.
The Live Industry
Currently one of most profitable areas of the industry, the module will look at what and who is involved in touring and putting on shows. Festivals as well as merchandise, rights that are due and how they are collected, so that everyone involved can maximise their income, will all be covered in depth.
The Art and Craft of Songwriting
This module will take a deep look into song construction itself. Many writers can come up with decent melodies but how do you make them better? Is the song even the right tempo or key? These and other important areas will be explored fully. What do you do if you get writer’s block and what type of writer are you? In depth analysis of the creative process and all it’s issues will be examined in detail to ensure you always have something to work on, even if you think you don’t.
Monetisation and DIY Marketing
Now that you have written a bunch of great songs, how will you make money from them? The last thing many writers think about is the money and where it comes from. It is however one of the most important topics as although money may not be top of the list, you won’t get to have a career if you don’t think about it. Sessions will also focus on creating that initial audience to engage with be it a fanbase or music publisher facing.
Music Management in the Modern Age
The role of music management is many and varied and deep knowledge of all areas of the industry is a must. The lectures will allow an A&R professional to not just understand what they do and how but also, learn how to negotiate and work with a music manager.
Music and Culture
Knowing where music comes from and how it has changed is integral or you just end up writing and sounding like everyone else. This area of the course will explore the history of genres and not just look at the big artists of now, but who and what cultural changes influenced them to make the music they did.
Product to Market
Product to market will focus on how you will place your songs in the hands of your consumer. The person with an analytical mind will explore how different types of songwriters sell their songs. Either to the public or to other artists, learning how to gather and use data effectively to hit the right market at the right time with the right songs is key to supporting your career effectively.
Music Business Today
Music Business Today brings all students together to learn about multiple facets of the industry. It taps into who does what as roles in all the major areas are broken down and analysed. This module will cover the basics and will be an integral part of any students journey into the music industry as they seek to be a well rounded industry professional.
