Modules

The NHAM songwriting course is geared towards the writer behind the artist or the artist themselves and will explore a multitude of themes. Writing for other people is also key for those who wish to have longevity in this career path. An ability to filter content accordingly is also an important skill to have and integral elements such as this will be analysed.

Music Business Today

Music Business Today brings all students together to learn about multiple facets of the industry. It taps into who does what as roles in all the major areas are broken down and analysed. This module will cover the basics and will be an integral part of any students journey into the music industry as they seek to be a well rounded industry professional.

The Structure of the Song and the Creative Process

This module will take a deep look into song construction itself. Many writers can come up with decent melodies but how do you make them better? Is the song even the right tempo or key? These and other key areas will be explored fully. What do you to if you get writer’s block and what type of writer are you? In depth analysis of the creative process and all it’s issues will be examined in detail to ensure you always have something to work on, even if you think you don’t.

The Art of Lyrics and Language

Expression through lyrics is one of the most important areas of writing a song with vocals. This module will analyse in detail, lyrical techniques and themes as well teaching students to understand who they are writing for. It is a known fact that many of today’s hits geared at a younger marker are written by men in their mid 50’s. Not all lyrics an artist, for example will write, fit their persona so exploration of this is key to becoming a well rounded lyricist.

Music and Culture

Knowing where music comes from and how it has changed is integral or you just end up writing and sounding like everyone else. This area of the course will explore the history of genres and not just look at the big artists of now, but who and what cultural changes influenced them to make the music they did.

The Art and Craft of Production

Production these days is almost as important as the songs themselves. As a songwriter, recording your own works to pitch to others for whatever purpose is a sure fire way to help you to your career goals. Learning how to perform in the studio is just as important as performing live and this will discussed in detail. As an A&R understanding this process allows you to communicate with your writers and artists in a more coherant way.

Product to Market

Product to market will focus on how you will place your songs in the hands of your consumer. The person with an analytical mind will explore how different types of songwriters sell their songs. Either to the public or to other artists, learning how to gather and use data effectively to hit the right market at the right time with the right songs is key to supporting your career effectively.

Music Management

The role of music management is many and varied and deep knowledge of all areas of the industry is a must. The lectures will allow a songwriter to not just understand what they do and how but also, what they are looking for and how to negotiate and work with a music manager.
